Nudist Youth Camps: A Wedge Issue
By Michael Kush This issue of the Beach Buzz is largely devoted
to the controversy over the AANR Youth Leadership Camps for naturist
youth, and its larger repercussions. Some naturists and skinny-dippers
have wondered if this really is a significant issue for our concern.
Those who don’t intend to send their kids to such a camp often presume
a law against a nudist camp for kids won’t affect their right to bring
their own kids to a nudist resort or a naturist beach. Others whose
kids have grown and left the nest sometimes aren’t even concerned if
children were to be banned from participation in all naturist activities.
After all, this won’t affect their right to visit a nudist resort or
naturist beach, will it? Those making these assumptions fail to recognize
how this issue can be used as a wedge to bring naturism into disrepute
and to broaden the legislative attack on nude recreation. They also
are perhaps unaware of how difficult it is to influence the wording
and scope of legislation if naturists do not maintain strong public
relations and lobbying efforts.

A Summer of Education, Defense and Offense
Anatomy of an Anti-Nudity Battle
By Shirley Mason
By June 19th, I read the article about Congressman Mark Foley’s letter to Governor Bush and Attorney General Charlie Christ, giving a scathing account of our nude summer camps for naturist youth. I knew that doing nothing more than contemplating my navel, if I so decided, was going to be put on hold indefinitely.
The anger that I felt at reading what Congressman Foley said was only tempered by the thought of what must be done to defuse this public relations disaster.

Old enough
to make a lanyard, and to do it nude
By Kate Zernike
On the third-to-last day of summer camp, the temperature has risen to 98 degrees, and even the troopers have begun to whine.
“I don’t want to play strip volleyball!” complained Jane Jeffries, 13, her sunburned shoulders sagging. “I want to play regular volleyball.” Halie Nelson, 14, agreed, “Yeah, I’d rather get all the clothes off, and keep all the clothes off.”
Here at the Youth Leadership Camp run by the American Association for Nude Recreation, the dress code for regular volleyball and for the pudding toss, mini-golf and campfire sing-alongs is the same as it is for skinny dipping.

Coalition of Naturist Leaders
Confronts Rep. Foley and the Media
Rep. Foley’s letter attacking the AANR
Youth Leadership Camp was written on June 18, 2003, the same day that
the first article on the Camp appeared in The New York Times. On that
day and the next, Foley also appeared on a number of news and commentary
programs. On June 20th, Shirley Mason, B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation’s Executive
Director, sent an invitation to Rep. Foley to meet with the leaders
of the national and local naturist organizations to discuss the camps,
and to correct misconceptions he had regarding both the functioning
of the camps, and naturism in general. A coalition of concerned naturist
groups was quickly formed.

CON
Ban Teen Nude Summer Camps
By Esther Hartstein
Teen nude camps are child abuse of a pernicious
sort, and ought to be banned. Legal under Florida State standards of
“nude but not lewd,” nude camps for teens have been operating full force
there for at least ten years. Should consensual teen recreation in the
nude be considered illegal? Yes, and with good reason.

PRO Don't Ban
Teen Nude Summer Camps
By Marvin Frandsen, Ph.D.
The first nudist resort was planted in
central Europe exactly a century ago in 1903. Before many years had
passed nudism also became an American phenomenon with nudist camps and
resorts springing up throughout the country. Today hundreds of nudist
camps and resorts exist in the United States. Over 60,000 Americans
are card carrying members of the American Association for Nude Recreation
(AANR), the largest and oldest of several nudist associations. Beyond
the traditional camps and resorts, a burgeoning nude travel business
has sprung up. In a success story as American as apple pie, U.S. entrepreneurs
are satisfying public demand for nudist recreation to the tune of about
$400 million a year in nudist clubs alone.

Some perspective on naturist youth camps
By Paul LeValley, Ph.D.
Naturist youth camps have been around
for a long time. In 1939, a chain of traditional camps in Vermont added
skinny-dips, nude hikes, and nude gardening to their program. There
were two boys’ camps, a girls’ camp, and a mixed camp for older teens.
Those camps still operate today, though nudity is now restricted to
the swimming area.

Former ASA President Over Sales of Nude Videos
By Bob Morton
Using the same sort of innuendo, inflammatory hyperbole and politically motivated disregard for the truth that marked his alarmed reaction to nude summer camps for the school-age sons and daughters of American nudists, Congressman Mark Foley (R-Florida) has found a new focus amid what some military analysts might call “a target-rich environment.”

Please support the effort to defend naturism
from public misunderstanding and undue government interference
Currently naturism is in the news, due
mainly to the publicity over the AANR Youth Leadership Camp. Legislators
in Florida, like Rep. Quinones, have already expressed interest in enacting
new anti-nudity laws in the 2004 legislative session. Preliminary hearings
on Texas HB 50 show how heated the debate can be. This is an issue that
we believe will not go away any time soon, and will need our attention
until the end of the next Florida legislative session in 2004.

The Art of Nude Protest!
The Boston Tea Party; the Underground
Railroad; the Suffragette Movement; labor union actions for decent working
conditions and decent wages; the Civil Rights marches of the ‘50’s
and 60’s: Today, these are all hallowed icons of American history,
viewed as protests of brave men and women for freedom and fair treatment,
and against injustice. Yet, in their time, many decried these protests
as dangerous, illegal acts, undermining the peace, tranquility, and
stability of society. Many labeled the protesters as criminals, rabble-rousers,
un-Godly, or just plain scum.
Whatever their views or politics, all Americans should recognize that
part of the genius and success of our democracy is due to the ability
of our citizens to freely protest what they feel are wrongs and injustices.

Naturists: Torchbearers of Liberty
Nudity, individual rights, and religious
freedom
Many readers of the Beach
Buzz enjoy nudity solely as a harmless
recreational pleasure. Yet, for others, nudity may also carry deeper
social or religious implications. It may be emblematic of one’s
perceived unity with nature or with God. It may be an attempt to strip
away the status and the pretensions that come with clothing –
from the tailored suit of the corporate executive, to the designer jacket
of the inner city youth – to relate to one another more openly
and honestly. Or it may be an expression of freedom, liberty, and individual
rights.

Park as the site for a volunteer public service project on August 15th,
to include dune restoration, painting, and the installation of new Vita

beach area. To correct this oversight, a coalition of Naturist groups
was quickly formed to solicit volunteers to complete the painting of
the remaining lifeguard towers and the structures adjoining the Naturist
Beach.

International Naturist
Federation Speaks for 33,000,000 Skinny-dippers
Will Tourism and Government
Leaders Listen?
By Shirley Mason
Editor's Note
Ten years ago (August 1992), the International
Naturist Federation Congress met at Paradise Lakes Nudist Resort in
Pasco County, Florida and signed an open letter to the Governor of Florida,
urging him to help in encouraging a more Naturist/nudist friendly state
for its residents and tourists alike. We had about six traditional clothing
optional beaches relatively safe from arrest and about 50 small public
land sites still usable by skinny-dippers.
Now, ten years later (August, 2002) the same International Naturist
Federation Congress met at Cypress Cove Nudist Resort in Kissimmee,
Florida and drafted a similar open letter to both public government
officials and private business interests in the hospitality and tourism
industries. Today, in excess of 50 of the 67 counties in Florida have
anti-nudity ordinances and the State Park anti-nudity rule still exists
banning not only full nudity but thong bathing suits and women's top-free
sunbathing – even though we've passed an equal protection/non-discrimination
clause to our State Constitution. Laws are getting more restrictive
and oppressive for Naturists and we have only two traditional clothing
optional beaches that are safe to use and no other sites truly usable
for skinny-dippers.

Jock Sturges: Photographer and Naturist
Working largely with naturist subjects,
Jock Sturges’ work often presents images of children, adolescents,
and, not infrequently, their mothers, who are casually and unselfconsciously
nude in their daily lives. This has led to prosecution – and persecution
– by the “not-so-Christian religious right” – to
use his own term. In 1990, the FBI raided his San Francisco studio and
seized his work; many of his subjects were contacted and interviewed,
in an attempt to substantiate charges of child pornography. Due to the
unwavering support of his subjects and of the artistic community, a
federal grand jury refused to bring in an indictment.
In October 2001, Jock Sturges participated in a conversation with Michael
Kush and Shirley Mason of B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation. Here is their interview.

The Liberalization Of American Mores

During the last 50 years, there has been
a tremendous liberalization in American attitudes concerning sexual
behavior, but public nudity continues to evoke disgust and ridicule.
Even though legal restrictions have been relaxed and clothing-optional
beaches are more numerous than ever before, as are the sunbathers who
frequent them, most Americans continue to disapprove of nudity no less
than their grandparents did. In spite of the fact that it now is quite
acceptable to display nearly all of one’s body poolside or at the
beach, total nudity continues to make Americans very uncomfortable.

Nude Art Throughout History
By Paul LeValley
If we distinguish man from other animals
by our ability to use tools, human existence began about 2 million years
ago. Around 40,000 B.C.E., Neanderthal people (about to go extinct)
began wearing the first furs. All people had been naked until then,
and most would remain so for thousands of years more. The first clothes
were decorative headbands – not loincloths. Nor did climate necessitate
the wearing of furs. People had survived at least four ice ages without
any clothes; the last glaciers retreated about 10,000 years before anyone
thought about wearing anything.

must be covered, which I will get to a little later.

A Brief History of the Gay Naturist Movement
By Jim Lewis
I have been asked to write a short history
of the gay naturist movement, but when telling a history of anything,
it is hard to know where to begin. At the turn of the last century,
while the U.S. was banning pictures of naked bathers, such as the oil
painting “September Morn” by French artist Paul Chabas, the
first nudists of Europe begin stripping themselves of Victorian era
prudery and bathing naked in Freilichtpark (Free Light Park) in Lubeck,
Germany. Out of this movement was born Nacktkultur, which stressed “health,
morality and clean living.” This, of course, included daily exercise,
a vegetarian diet, and Spartan outdoor living – all nude, of course.

Poseidon’s New Clothes
Public art gets dressed up – and down
Editorial
It’s been a good long time since
anybody paid so much attention to Poseidon, a bronze statue that’s
been aiming its invisible trident at Sacramento, California’s K
Street Mall since 1972.
This rendition of the mythological god of the sea – a replica of
a famous original and a gift from the government of Greece – has
become as much a part of the downtown backdrop as the steady drone about
what Sacramento needs to attract more convention business.
But Poseidon was restored to a position of prominence last week when
members of the Advanced Training Institute International – a home-schooling
organization meeting at the Sacramento Convention Center – took
offense at his nudity (one conventioneer likened it to “pornography”)
and sought permission to clothe him.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau acquiesced, and Poseidon appeared
on various days in a toga, khaki pants and finally on Friday –
when pictures of him were snapped for the front page of the next day’s
Bee – in a shirt, tie and slacks.

The Fetishized Breast
By Korina R. Jochim
Several years ago a case in New York
caught my attention. People v. Santorelli involved a group of women
who took off their shirts in the park on a hot day and bared their breasts.
They were cited for public nudity and took their case all the way to
the New York State Supreme Court. New York State had denied women the
right to bare their breasts in public. Around that time there was also
a march across the Buffalo Bridge in Buffalo. New York, with thousands
of women marching topless to protest the ticketing of those women in
the park.
As a feminist the case inspired me, but I didn’t know at the time
how closely an incident in my own life would match that of the women
in New York.

about their interest and their leanings when it comes to supporting

What I've learned is that Joe Martinez is one of the local Christian

self admittedly has no real knowledge of the workings of government.
He was very narrowly elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission on

something about his views and history of community activism. A few days
